OVERVIEW

The purpose of the CMB grant initiative is to support collaborations among network members in the neuro- and social sciences who are working at different levels of analysis, whose topics align with the FPR mission, and whose theories, models, or empirical research would benefit from multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary perspectives. 

We are particularly interested in bringing together people who don’t normally have the opportunity or funds to interact to: (i) present and discuss their work and methodologies, including use of leading-edge tools and techniques; (ii) exchange ideas; and (iii) explore areas of mutual interest in the liminal territory that exists between disciplines. Ultimately, the integrative projects supported by the grants should enrich explanatory models or create alternate conceptual frameworks as well as build new or strengthen existing collaborations with colleagues.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS (OCT 15 – NOV 8, 2021)

We are pleased to announce the third FPR Call for Proposals from CMB network members. The goal is to support contributions from the CMB space to new science, teaching, and/or intervention. At this stage of Network activity, proposals should relate directly to these criteria: 

• Advance the field of research into relationships among culture, mind, and brain
• Demonstrate multidisciplinary interactions 
• Represent research that otherwise would not have been conducted

The FPR seeks proposals that build on previously funded FPR activity and/or are fresh collaborations among Network members that advance work in the CMB space. Priorities highlighted in previous calls for application are listed in the appendix. Initially, the FPR sought to fund leading-edge workshops, fieldwork, and curriculum development. The first two priorities necessarily have been moderated by the pandemic. Hence, the Call for Proposals in Fall, 2020, requested innovation related to the “New Normal” (via an online conference, writing project, collaborative research or course, translational research project, or development of public-oriented material) or multidisciplinary collaborative analysis of existing data. This summer, members formed working groups and/or launched collaborative research that included a non-member. 

Proposals should build on existing work related to these priorities, or new collaborative work that directly targets them. We are on a short timeline for this round of grants, whose funding period will end on November 31, 2022. There will be no extensions. We realize the constraint this presents in such uncertain times for doing research, and suggest you consider what might really push your and other members’ work to the next level. 

Some working groups or collaborations already have a proposal in mind, and others are considering joining in on existing collaborations or initiatives among members. Please feel free to contact Carol and Connie for feedback on developing your proposal. Ideally, we would like to give as many grants as possible within funds available. Feasibility within the funding time frame is an important consideration.

Because the timeline for the entire granting process is tight, we have instituted a rolling submission process. Submissions will be accepted during the period Friday, October 15 – Monday, November 8. The external reviewers generously have agreed to review as proposals come in, so earliest submissions will receive first consideration. Decisions will be sent out by early December 2021, and funds will be disbursed on or before Friday, January 28, 2022. End dates must be on or before Wednesday, November 30, 2022.

APPENDIX

Previously funded activities

• The first FPR Call for Proposals in 2019 offered three different mechanisms for funding to support culture, mind, and brain interactions: (1) workshop grants to promote innovative research and support collaborations among researchers in the neuro- and social sciences who are working at different levels of analysis, with an emphasis on cultural processes as central; (2) research travel grants to support collaboration including resource and skill sharing among researchers in the neuro- and social sciences, working at different levels of analysis, to engage in innovative research that emphasizes cultural processes as central; and (3) curriculum development grants to support: (i) the creation of new courses that expose students to research in the humanities, neuro-, and social sciences that bear on a topic aligned with the FPR mission and CMB network objectives; or (ii) a significant revision to an existing undergraduate or graduate-level course.
• The second FPR Call for Proposals in 2020 solicited proposals that either (1) addressed some aspect of "The New Normal" (via an online conference, writing project, collaborative research or course, translational research project, or development of public-oriented material); or (2) proposed or providing additional support for a collaborative project involving method development; or analysis of existing data using novel approaches. 
• We also offered honoraria in Summer 2021 for (1) small group proposals; or (2) solo research or collaborative projects with a non-Network member. Projects were presented at our CMB Network Sept. 10–11, 2021, meeting.
